St. Lucia
St.
Lucia, also known as the "Helen
of the West" for its natural
beauty, lies in the heart of the
eastern Caribbean chain of
islands. Beautiful Caribbean
beaches, enchanting rainforests
in the interior, and a
population of loving people make
St. Lucia the reality of many
travelers’ dreams.
St. Lucia boasts a World
Heritage Site, the Pitons, and
Twin Mountains at Soufriere
which rise above 2,000 feet from
sea level, providing a natural
habitat for exotic flora and
fauna with breathtaking views
that will excite the nature
lover in you.
Multiple ethnic roots influenced
by a host of colonial
occupations have created a
nation full of historic
attractions and charm. St.
Lucia's people are quick to
offer a warm welcome to visitors
and to share their lovely
island.
Vieux
Fort however, is
located in the southern part of
St. Lucia. It is the
second-largest town on the
island and is the home of St
Lucia's international airport,
Hewanorra International Airport.
(Hewanorra is the island's old
Amerindian name). Vieux Fort is
also the name of the Quarter
that encompasses the city, just
north of downtown. Both the town
and the airport lie on a
relatively flat plain that
slopes gently toward the north
and the south-central mountains,
and as the southern tip of St
Lucia comes to a point around
Vieux Fort, the runway stretches
– literally – from
the
east to the west coast of the
island.
Just south of Vieux Fort – in
fact, its St Lucia's most
southerly point – lies Cape
Moule ŕ Chique Lighthouse,
reached by bearing left onto New
Dock Road at the town roundabout
and then left again into the
hills, and one of the finest
viewpoints on the island. The
Anse de Sables beach has a
favored spot for windsurfers and
kite surfers at its southern
end. Also at the south end of
the beach is the Maria Islands
Interpretive Centre. A small
natural history centre as well
as the place to arrange a trip
to the Maria Islands, which lie
about half a mile offshore. The
one-room museum provides an
interesting insight into local
ecosystems and history, with
displays on Amerindian culture
(including skeletal remains and
a skull found in the area), as
well as on
mangroves
and marine life.
Originally a fishing town, Vieux
Fort is these days fast becoming
a rival to the capital city of
Castries. The town can pride
itself on two modern shopping
malls with most services
imaginable and several other
tastefully designed office
buildings, while at the same
time not having lost any of its
West Indian character and colour.
There is the Saturday market
downtown, there are the street
vendors with their spices,
fruits, vegetables, jewellery
and items of clothing, there are
the wooden rum shops adorned
with fading signs that continue
to
advertise
rum, crackers, soft drinks and
ice-cream of brands that no one
has seen in a decade or more,
and of course there are the old
fishermen who, seated on low
stools in front of their houses,
patiently mend their nets. Vieux
Fort is an experience in Creole
living.
At the Kabran Hotel, we continue
this tradition by bringing
together the best of the old
world with the very best of the
new.
With a five minute-walk to the
center of Vieux Fort town, five
minute drive to the
international airport, and a
short walk to the beach: what
could be more convenient?
The Kabran Hotel is
strategically located a short
distance from the hustle and
bustle of Vieux Fort, and
within sight of the wild beauty
of Anse de Sable: the longest
and undeniably the most
beautiful stretch of white,
sandy beach in St. Lucia. |
